Step Parent Adoptions
For a step parent adoption, there has to be consent from the mother and father of the child. However, if one parent has failed to have adequate contact or support the child for a period of at least one year, this requirement may be waved. Also, any step parent seeking to adopt must submit to a criminal background check and a Department of Human Services background check.
Out of Family Adoptions
Third party or out of family adoptions are more complicated and require a background check as well as a study. This is in addition to the requirements of step parent adoptions.
