Stepparent Adoptions
For a stepparent adoption, there has to be consent from the mother and father of the child. However, if one parent has failed to have adequate contact or support the child for a period of at least one year, this requirement may be waived. Also, any stepparent seeking to adopt must submit to a criminal background check and a Department of Human Services background check.
Out-Of-Family Adoptions
Third-party or out-of-family adoptions are more complicated and require background checks as well as a study. This is in addition to the requirements of stepparent adoptions.
